[You know, it's a good thing he's getting so used to the hugging. Because these days he accepts the affection all too easily, just gently patting the boy's head without even looking up from where he's scooping some curry chicken into a bowl of rice.]
[He even refrains from rolling his eyes at the comment, just giving a soft snort.]
I'll do my best to stop aging, just for you. But I can't make any promises.
Here.
[And he's going to slide that steaming hot bowl right on over to Kanoa. Sorry he lied about feeding it to the cats.]
[It was another day with little to do, so as usual the Puppet Formerly Known as the Kabukimono went to the forges to get to work on some new blades. It felt odd sometimes, to continue the practice after everything that happened at Tatarasuna, but he reminded himself that it was an important skill that could help the people there.
He was just finishing putting clay on the hot iron when someone approached him, he offered a smile before speaking.]
I'll be right with you! This part gets a little loud-
[And he dipped the blade into water and held it there to cool- and while most did the sensible thing and used tongs to handle hot iron, he simply used his hands.
Once the blade finally cooled enough he removed it and laid it flat, turn to the stranger as he shook the water from his arm.]
I'm sorry about that, one must work quickly while the iron is hot. May I help you?
(( I totally dropped the ball! Please forgive me! ))
[ The face there looks familiar to Cyno but the way he speaks and holds himself is different. Perhaps this is one of those situations where it’s merely a coincidence of a place like this... He returns the smile and watches the young man’s work, and the way he forgoes the usual tools in handling hot materials that touching would have most screaming in agony.
Curious. ]
There’s quite a few sayings about that, indeed. I just heard rumors of your work and came to see for myself. It does seem like you do have quite an effective hands on method.
[On the 24th Kanoa will find a box with his name on it along with a holiday card that reads,]
Merry Christmas! - Arrakis Faylare
[Inside are a small bag of chocolates and a personalized chess set!
Arrakis attempted to make his chocolates sword shaped but they kept breaking so he chose cat shaped instead. The chocolates are mildly spicy with a hint of orange for his bright personality.
Kanoa's chess board is designed after a sword. The white squares are polished metal to resemble a sword's blade and the black squares are black wood. The board has a black border with a rapier carved in silver on each edge. The pieces are black and white wood and carved on the bottom of one of the black knights are Arrakis's initials, AF.]
[On December 25th, Kanoa will find a package on his doorstep containing an assortment of teas, a box of goodies from the local bakery, and a palm-sized glass heart. A note attached reads:]
Hey Kanoa. Thanks for making all of those swords for me short notice. You really helped me out. I put some tea and snacks in here, but come to think of it, I'm not sure if you eat or not. If you don't, I'll take them off your hands, and I can just get you something else.
I know that glass heart isn't really the type you're looking for, but I thought of you when I saw it.
[Delivered quite kindly by the mail mice to Kanoa's home is a bag of homemade potpourri and a little handmade Christmas Pixie. Last but not least, there are some Christmas cookies (some are a little misshapen but it's clear they were made with care).
Attached is a card inside is delicate handwriting:]
MERRY CHRISTMAS KANOA I made the cookies myself with some help! Hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Again, Merry Christmas!
[On his doorstep there will be a box filled with a pair of geta sandals and a book of Pinocchio. At least he left a name on the card, that’s all. Happy holidays kid.]
[At some point in the afternoon/evening, after this conversation, Kanoa will receive a call. Maybe a text would have been more appropriate, but Aubrey’s marginally more used to leaving messages after the beep.]
Hey, is this Kanoa? Uh, I’m a… I know Eren, and he was talking about getting a sword from you. For me. My name’s Aubrey. I have my arm measurements, and if there’s anything else you need, let me know. Thanks. Really appreciate it.
[not even thirty seconds after her message was left, she’d get a video call back. She may have used voice, but he wanted to smile at her so she would know he is friendly and nice!
Of course his smile probably does not inspire great faith in his abilities. He’s very childlike, and clearly excited at the idea of having a new friend.]
Hello! Kanoa is my name, and Eren is my friend! You must be friends too!
I will make you a swords! Or find you one. I have made many swords. They are good swords to keep you safe!
[Then he finally remembers the reason she actually called- he needed arm numbers! Eren must have told her he would need them! He knew things like that, Kanoa found it very impressive.]
You measured your arms yourself, so tell me the numbers and you will have a sword!
[Aubrey thought she’d tweaked the setting that turned her video on when the other person did; she thought wrong, apparently. She picks up at the tail end of Kanoa’s return call, surprise still written clear and stupid on her face. It takes her another couple seconds to register she has, in fact, picked up.]
How old are you?
[What a nice greeting! Really, Aubrey shouldn’t be surprised when Eren was-slash-is a child soldier, but somehow her vaguely-formed image of Kanoa the Sword Guy was… well, not childlike. This place is full of surprises.
[The measurements and other such formalities will come, she just. Needs a second.]
[Well, buckle up Aubrey because he's about to get even weirder.]
Mother made me over a century ago, but I slept for many of those years. I woke up... three or four summers ago I think. I am not so good at remembering time.
[Huh. Guy who sleeps for three or four years. Ain’t that familiar—and also, not something she wants to think about, so Aubrey wipes at the frown physically for a moment.] Time sure flies, doesn’t it....
[Her expression settles back to its usual flatline.] Anyway, ah. You make swords. [She tilts her head slightly.] Have you… always known that?
They sound like pretty cool people. [There’s a tug at her expression at the mention of hair-brushing, somewhere in the territory of fond but too fleeting to be sure.]
Hey, and about helping— What do you want for the sword? [Eren already mentioned an “understanding,” but she’s going to the source for a reason. Oblivious to Kanoa’s sleepless days, Aubrey figures this overnight sword-making must be a process.]
[Well, bullet dodged with that “even if you were not friends” addition. She was this close to scrounging up some protest.]
Right. [A nod, and an attempt to settle the not-quite-formed irritation.] Noble goal.
[With that, a glance aside, to the keyboard, back down again as Aubrey finally types up the measurements. She’s poking at the buttons with one finger; very experienced texter, this one.
[Absently,] You just make swords for everyone around here?
I do not think I make them any faster than most humans would. However, I do not require rest or water, so I can continue making them where humans will grow weary and hot and cease their work.
[Grabted he did have some Adults that would kindly drag him out of the forge to make him eat food that he technically did not need.]
[Numbers sent, and with that she’s looking at him with narrowed eyes again.]
You… look pretty human to me. From what I can make out. [Maybe a bold claim from someone with bright pink hair? Not to mention everything about sleeping for years. But still.]
[Oh, so that’s why he seemed just a little uncanny. But more importantly…
[Aubrey frowns for a moment. Does she really want to get into what makes humans human? Does it matter, even? Eh, her brain’s not made for deep philosophy crap—and moreover, why dash the kid’s dreams?]
…Yeah. The heart’s a start, I guess. [Very decisive reply!] You really could’ve fooled me, so… I think you’re on your way.
Should have been there for the shampoo eating incident
You know, I’ll take your word for it. [On the sword knowledge, she means. Not even being sarcastic; if anyone would be a sword expert, it’s someone raised by blacksmiths.]
Oh, that reminds me— uh, if it’s worth mentioning, I’ve… never used a sword before. Eren will help with that, but ah…
[Crap. She’d thought about asking the swordmaker for instruction directly, and then she saw a very youthful puppet-person. And it’s not that she doesn’t want Eren’s instruction, just…]
What would you recommend? [There, keep it vague.] For learning, and stuff.
Oh! I will give you one of my dull swords for practice too then!
[He gets excited enough that he hops off whatever he’s sitting on top preemptively start looking through his “wonky” swords- but then paused- oh he could offer her more than that, couldn’t he?]
I am not so good at fighting, but I can teach you proper forms! I was taught how to test swords, so I know many techniques and forms- but not when to use them.
Yes! Sometimes when I make swords I make mistakes, so they are not good swords for real fighting, but they are good for practice fighting because they are not very sharp.
[Of course he was taught with wooden swords, but he didn’t know how to make those.]
[In late March, Kanoa will receive a small box. There’s a folded note on top, written on nice stationery in (a very amateur attempt at) quill ink:]
Hi Kanoa,
I’ll be upfront: this is part request, part gift. I’d like you to make a sword for a friend of mine. Measurements are on the back of this paper. It’s ok if you’re busy and can’t or don’t want to do it, though.
The gift part is that you can keep this, whether you make another sword or not. I know you said you didn’t want anything for mine, but… here’s payment for here’s something anyway.
—Aubrey
[Within the package: a wood-carved box, with crossed swords atop the lid. (Dealer’s choice on the details.) On the bottom is a signature from the local woodworkers’ shop, Built by Otto; and carved across the front is a short message: “Don’t forget to blink!”]
(ooc: Not expecting a thread here, just a small token for the local puppet swordmaker!)
[He’s getting a picture of a frog in return. Not the cat. Just a literal frog he’s found.
This could mean many things. He could (and probably should) respond to the very nice offer Maruki made, but there was something about this frog that takes precedence.
Probably to dodge the topic of Eren not being there.]
[Oh. That was a very nice picture. That brought happiness.
So he smiled, even if no one could see it, because that is what humans do when they are brought happiness.
He sends a picture back, this time of Frog (cat). It was blurry from motion, but in an attempt to recreate Korroke’s leaf, a leaf was offered to Frog… only for Frog to lunge and try to eat it.]
[In frog’s defense, most things this little puppet holds is indeed edible, and he’s got the reaction time of a dead snail. Her predisposition to theft was all his doing.
This time she got bamboozled though. Leaves are not tasty.
Alas her suffering goes unnoticed in favor of the lizard. They had lizards in Inazuma like that! He remembered them. This one must be a friend of Maruki’s. It looked happy.
So there’s a bit of time before he sends a return picture, this time of another frog (literal frog), but this one was all puffed up and agitated at being bothered a an oafish giant. Kanoa, of course, just thought the frog was trying to speak to him because they were friends.
[ This time, a message accompanies the photo of a rabbit curled up in the garden; it's BB, but there's no way of telling that for someone who hasn't seen her transform. ]
Mother is the Electro Archon, the God of Lightning and Eternity. She imbued me with a fragment of her divinity, so I can do what she does.
Only littler. Because my fragment is little.
I do not know exactly what it is she can do though. All I have seen of her power is the island she cut in twain slaying Orobashi. That is how I know the chasm would not be good for humans. The island passage is like that. It is even not so good for me.
[ At some point during the week, Kanoa receives an invitation:
I'll be hosting a dinner party on March 22 and would love to see you there!
Feel free to come to the Horizons farmhouse any time after 5 PM.
Please do not bring anything! No food, no drinks, nothing but your presence. I appreciate the thought, but for me, the joy of this is being able to cook for a group of people, and I would like to handle it myself.
Hope to see you there!
Dr. Maruki
